About Mahakaleshwar Temple Ujjain
Shri Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is one of the twelve famous Jyotirlingas in India. The importance of this temple is described in many old Hindu scriptures called Purans. Since the time of the poet Kalidasa, many Sanskrit writers have praised this temple with deep feeling.
In ancient times, Ujjain was the center for timekeeping in India, and Mahakal (a form of Lord Shiva) was seen as the main god of the city. Lord Shiva, as the god of time, is believed to live forever in Ujjain in his powerful form.
The Mahakaleshwar Temple has a tall tower that rises high into the sky. Its grand look fills people with wonder and respect. Even today, in the busy life of the city, Mahakal remains an important part of Ujjain and connects people to their old traditions.
The lingam (symbol of Shiva) at Mahakaleshwar is special. It is believed to be swayambhu, meaning it appeared on its own and not made by anyone. It is said to have its own spiritual power, unlike other lingams which are made through rituals.
The idol of Mahakaleshwar faces south, which is called Dakshinamurti. This is very rare and is found only in this temple among the twelve Jyotirlingas, according to Tantric beliefs.
Above the main shrine, there is another idol of Omkareshwar Shiva. Around the main area, the idols of Ganesh, Parvati, and Karttikeya are placed in the west, north, and east. The idol of Nandi, Shiva’s bull, is placed in the south.
There is also an idol of Nagchandreshwar on the third floor, which is open for darshan (viewing) only once a year on Nag Panchami.
On the day of Mahashivaratri, a big fair takes place near the temple, and people worship Shiva throughout the night.
